AEthics Project – Business Law & Ethics

Select a professional organization in your field of study, a professional organization that you would be a member of, not a company that you would go to work for. To clarify, this is not a company, but a professional organization that has members of that profession. It is recommended that you confirm with your instructor the organization that you have chosen if not one of the following:

Management & Marketing: American Marketing Association or Retail Trade Association
Accounting & Finance: American Institute of CPA’s or Institute of Management Accountants
AIT: International Association of Administrative Professionals
Engineering: American Society of Mechanical Engineers
IT: Association of Information Technology Professionals.
Others: Your instructor will consult with faculty members in your major.

Obtain a copy of the code of professional ethics or professional conduct for this organization and address the following:
1. Indicate why did you choose the organization you chose? How does it relate to your field of study or your professional field?

2. Summarize IN YOUR OWN WORDS the code of ethics and/or conduct. Do not just rewrite the code. Be complete and thorough in your summary, including as much of the code in your discussion as possible. Include reasons why these points are important to a company and meaningful to your profession. This is the bulk of the points of your report, so you should be writing at least ½ of your report in this section. Put your thoughts into this section, not just the code points. Give examples and illustrations of why this point is in the code for your profession, and the results for your profession of violating this point(s) of the code.

3. Indicate which of the ethics included in the code are, in your opinion the most important to the profession and why. There is no right or wrong answer here, but you must address this point or you will automatically lose points.

4. Show at least two examples of how the code was violated recently (within last couple of years). Find these violations of specific points of your code of ethics either on the web site where you found your code, or in professional publications or in newspapers. Explain the violation, the results and effects, and the punishment given. To get your full points on this section, you must show specifically which points of your code were violated by the offender. There are numerous examples of ethical violations for every profession these days, so look carefully. Attach documentation of your violation to your report.

Format specifications must be exactly followed for full credit:
Format: Make sure that your name is on the top of your report, top, right corner.
Length: At least five pages, no more than seven pages, double-spaced (points will be deducted if more than seven pages or less than five pages).
Page numbers: Required, bottom of each page
Style: Times New Roman
Margins: One inch maximum
Font: 12 maximum
Appendix: This section is in addition to the 5-7 page report, at the end of the report. Copy of the code of ethics/conduct AND documentation of violations (see #4). Appendix is in addition to the five to seven page requirement. And please include the web address of your code of ethics and violations on the print-outs included in your appendix.

The project will be graded for content and for grammar/compositional skills. Your reports are due at the end of week 10, approximately October 31st, but your instructor will give you the exact date for your class. Ten percent will be deducted from your grade for each calendar day that the report is late. Other deductions will be made for any missing item, and for any format specification not fulfilled. This report must be completed to receive credit for the course.
