Engineering and Construction watershed’s characteristics
Project description
Briefly describe a watershed’s characteristics (or properties) which affect its hydrologic features.
2. Answer and discuss the following case Background Information In general, the return period of 2-year floods or less are dominated by mostly channel hydraulics, 10 to 20-year floods will have some overbank hydraulics, and 50 to 100 year floods will have substantial overbank and valley storage hydraulics. The hydraulics of overbank flow is significantly different from channel flow due to increased surface roughness of the flow boundary and some other factors. A historical flood event of 1996 was used to calibrate the unit hydrograph parameters for the subbasin of 227 mi2 of the watershed of a project under study is only about 5-10 years frequency. Question Is using a 5-10-yr historical flood data reliable to predict the ultimate PMF (Probable Maximum Flood) of a return period greater than 1010-yr? Please answer this question from the standpoint of watershed properties you learned from last class and explain your reasons.
